Business Goals


We are a business and every month we have expenses that are being paid out of pocket. We can not really afford to wait on class schedules any more, even if we are still only able to use volunteers. To overcome that, we need a larger pool of talent to draw from that can be depended upon, at least some of the time. Thus, having people that duplicate each other's skill sets, even overlapping in areas, would seem to be a useful approach. Perhaps we should initiate a "talent search" for this at Space.com and other appropriate sites. We need skill sets for the various other departments of the company as well.

Here are some of the areas and skills:

Web Development Group

1. Webmaster: Will develop the web team, assign tasks, control security on all company sites and has final control of what will be placed on the site. Will develop and train an understudy. Will report to executive level on any web issues. Will work with project management to implement various web projects. Will work with understudy to initiate and develop web based products for 1000 Planets' sites. Will identify and select company "standards" for software used on and in support of company systems. Will acquire and develop an (initial) volunteer support group with the following talents:
1. HTML developer and designer
2. Unix system administrator
3. Frontpage site designer
4. Graphics developer
5. Assistant Webmaster (understudy and backup)
6. MySQL Database administrator
7. Apache and site developer utilities expert

Seth Matheson is currently the webmaster.

Marketing Group

2. Purpose is to clearly define what we are going to market and choose a key person or two to develop a marketing organization, process and to develop product lines.
1. Marketing research and business development manager (executive level)
2. Marketing manager
3. Marketing staff (graphics development, advertisements, sales, back end support)
4. Order fulfillment manager (works with web group on web based sales)

Project Management Group

3. Identify several project managers. Purpose is to assist in developing 1000 Planets' objectives and supporting ongoing projects (such as Mars Prize, DART, Planetary Capital, etc.) They must recruit volunteer staff and set objecives for the executives to review. Will use and develop project management systems and tools.

Technical Development Group

4. Identifty one or two Technical Development Leaders (Executive level). Purpose is to:
1. Research marketplace and document potential areas of interest, providing executive "overview" documents for these areas.
2. Acquire key technical support staff to work with project management on existing projects for review and implementation when funds become available--assisting executive level staff in fund raising efforts.

Infrastructure Support

5. Identify one or two Infrastructure Support Leaders. Purpose is to coordinate documentation of 1000 Planets' Technical and Business historicals (such as the public and privite boards) and on-going documentation. (Will work with Web support personnel to organize this on-line and support marketing documentation efforts when it comes on-line) Will answer the phone when we get to that point.
1. Attends ALL chat sessions and records and distributes minutes. Ensures that Public Relations is kept informed about key points of these sessions.

Human Resources (HR)

6. Human Resources: develop an understudy or two in the United States to assist with HR issues, handle HR e-mail and provide documentation to the web development and documentation groups to post on the site.
1. Organize HR documentation in an intelligent manner on the site. Works with web development and documentation groups.
2. Ensure that current and accurate "policy" documents are in place.
3. Works with the Legal department to stay within boundaries of national and international law.

Public Relations (PR)

7. Identify one or two Public Relations Leaders. Purpose is to:
1. Write PR boilerplate for 1000 Planets and projects.
2. Acquire and develop team to support 1000 Planets' efforts at support group building and the efforts of other groups within the company that interface with the general public. Works with the infrastructure support staff at documenting and tracking memberships.
3. Attends ALL chat sessions and routinely reads the bulletin boards and any technical reports that are generated. Interfaces with the executive level for information on company policy and direction.
4. Writes and distributes press releases (after executive approval).
5. Works with infrastructure specialists and Legal department for coordination of public and confidential information.

Fund Raising

8. Identify one or two fund raising leaders. Purpose is to review, select and pursue clearly identifiable monetary sources and processes that meet 1000 Planets' objectives--leaders provide information and solution proposals to executive level.
1. Develop support staff to actively pursue funding resources (such as grants and club membership dues) and develop processes that will achieve 1000 Planets' objectives (such as Planetary Capital, venture capital funding, acquisitions capitalization, etc.).

Executive

9. Acquire executive level personnel as needed. Purpose is to:
1. Acquire executive support staff for the transmission, reception and recording of inter/intra-company information.
2. Develop a formal business plan and implement it.
3. Coordinate efforts and provide direction and support to upper level management of subsidiaries.
4. Identify and select upper level management for the various departments of the company and subsidiaries.
5. Review and select goals for the company.
6. Collaborate and establish relationships with various groups and other businesses that have similar or related goals.
7. Select and implement general directives that the company will focus on after appropriate review.
8. Identify and select executive level "troubleshooters" to resolve issues at any level of the company--troubleshooters work with project managers, HR, marketing and legal as required. Troubleshooters provide feedback and input to the executive level on any significant issues within the company.
